The Jewish cemetery in Victoria, British Columbia

Introduction The Jewish cemetery in Victoria, British Columbia, is located on the corner of Cedar Hill Road and Fernwood. This historical cemetery remains active within the Jewish community. It was consecrated in 1860, and the first burial was conducted on March 20, 1861. The individual buried was murder victim Morris Price. In 2012, the cemetery was victimized by vandalism, which resulted in the destruction of multiple gravestones. Since, individuals should request approval before visiting the gated cemetery. The Jewish doctrine believes that sacred items should never be disposed. Therefore, the cemetery has an open grave where items that are no longer in use are placed. The community purposefully includes monument inscriptions to show an individual’s connection to the Holocaust. This action creates tribute to those who were victims of the Holocaust. This practice also creates a collaborative means for the community to mourn over these survivors. What is the role of identity in this process of mourning Holocaust survivors? The Jewish identity is reintegrated among the monuments through Hebrew inscriptions, the Star of David, and ritual practices (Appendix B, Figure 3). Eva Reimers (1999), interprets that a collective group identity is based on the idea of common historical origin (p. 148). This idea is important when analyzing the role of identity in the process of mourning Holocaust survivors. It illustrates that the formation of identity is founded on historical events. Therefore, the Holocaust serves as a historical event, which reinforced the importance of Jewish identity to the Jewish community. The practices of collectively mourning Holocaust survivors serves as an extension over the generations, which reduce the threat death poses to reduction of Jewish identity (Reimers, 1999, p.148). None of these key features to a film could have any substance or feeling without the help of music. Composers play a big role for setting the tone of the movie, developing characters, moving along or supporting action, and depicting the time and place the movie is taking place. In the movie Heat, Elliot Goldenthal does just that. Goldenthal was born in NY in 1954 and studied music under John Corigliano and Aaron Copeland. At the end of the movie Robert De Niro’s character is trying to escape the country with the girl while Al Pacino’s character is right on his tail. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through a field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal’s score was replaced in the final scene with Moby’s â€Å"God Moving Over the Face of the Water.† Director Michael Mann felt that Moby’s music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. Kevin somewhat adopts Russel, giving him security and care, proving that a wild bird does a better parenting job than his actual parents do. Also, the fact that Ellie lost a child must resonate somewhere inside Carl because he makes sure that Kevin is reunited with her children. Scenes where shown: When she lifts Russel onto her back and plays with him- The fun of having a friend and Russel’s desire to be cared for. Injured- How life is delicate and even the smartest and quickest can still be hurt. It also symbolises karma; how because Russel treated Kevin with care and love, Kevin selflessly chose to save them from Muntz Kevin giving away her position by squawking- Naivety and innocence. Cicero Essay Cicero was and still is one of the greatest writers and politicians of all-time. He studied law, oratory, literature, and philosophy under Scaevola to enrich Rome with fine writings and political excellence. His birth name was Marcus Tullius. Born in 106 B.C., Cicero was anything but popular. His hometown of Arpinum was not exactly among the top cities of Rome. Cicero unlike most great writers and politicians of his time, had to work hard and use the wealth and power of others to find his place in Roman aristocracy. Cicero finally reached the pentacle of his political career when he concurred Catiline in a battle for the position of consul. After Cicero had won the position of consul in 64 B.C. Catiline organized a plot to overthrow the government. When Cicero found out he suppressed the conspiracy and had many of his cohorts executed. Although this was one of his greatest accomplishments, he was exiled in 58 B.C. After a year of concentrating on his writing, Cicero was called back t o Rome by Pompey the Great. In 51 B.C. he was assigned to the position of proconsul of the providence of Cilicia. In 50 B.C. Cicero returned to Rome to help Pompey with his fight against Caesar, but after Pompeys defeat Cicero became a supporter of Caesar. After Caesars assassination Cicero went back into politics and became a supporter of Octavian. On December 7, 43 B.C., Cicero was executed by Marc Antony as an enemy of the state. While alive Cicero greatly enriched the vocabulary of his own language. Cicero covered more intellectual subjects in his writings than most writers of his time. Many of his philosophical works were borrowed from Greek sources are very valuable and would have been left undiscovered without Ciceros documentation of them. Most of his rhetorical works, written in dialogue form, are rich sources of history. The clarity in which he ruled his writing and political careers is only one reason that Cicero was and still is one of the greatest writers and politicians of all-time, and this was his effect on Rome and the rest of the world.
